Interactive Communications Studies

GB4FUN is a mobile fully self-contained communications centre that is already visiting schools and events up and down the country. The project is primarily aimed at supporting those studying for GCSEs and inspiring them into science based careers.

The Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex, located outside Canberra, Australia, is one of the three complexes which comprise NASA's Deep Space Network.

A truly interactive experience

The vehicle demonstrates the breadth of wireless technology in use today. Mobile phones, Wi-Fi, TV and many other areas of modern life depend on radio communication so this is one free visit that shouldn't be missed.

Students are encouraged to handle the equipment on board; this includes going on the air to chat to any of the millions of stations around the globe.

GB4FUN also demonstrates a wide range of other technologies including television transmitted from a mobile "Hat Cam" transmitter back to a terminal inside the vehicle, sophisticated satellite tracking software working in real time, and even weather satellites showing live pictures of the Earth.

The flexibility to customize your visit

Your GB4FUN demonstration can be altered according to your school's individual requirements. It can be customized to focus on a particular area of the science curriculum being studied.

It should also be remembered that GB4FUN not only teaches communications science but also can be used to assist in language studies, increase geographical knowledge and develop social skills.

Communications careers

Communications technology skills are in demand.

During a GB4FUN visit students will see these skills demonstrated, giving an ideal introduction to the concepts and practice that lies behind this rapidly growing and exciting industry, and possibly even the inspiration for a future career.
